IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- Jupiter Research finds that 66 percent of current pay TV subscribers are satisfied with their current services, but 52 percent of consumers would switch pay TV service if they could get a better price for the same channel selection. A la carte channel selection option followed, attracting 46 percent of consumers. This is a potential barrier for new entrants in the U.S. TV market (e.g., the telcos) that require huge investments in infrastructure and design services to attract subscribers in a saturated market. An additional threat of cable customers opting for cable phone service instead can further impact the telcos' core business. This leaves no option for the telcos but to match cable's triple-play bundle services.

Although the business case for a la carte channel selection remains uncertain, and media companies are likely to resist such service plans, the research firm states that IPTV services should focus on giving consumers greater choice and control over their television experience, if not true a la carte. The report also found only 6 percent of consumers interested in high definition programming and only 3 percent of consumers attracted to a greater selection of VoD services. IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- In a fourth-quarter earnings call last week, Qwest CEO Dick Notebaert indicated that even though his company is interested in IPTV, it would prefer to be a follower in the IPTV industry, rather than take charge like AT&T and Verizon. The carrier has built an FTTH network reaching 2,350 households in new developments in its 14-state territory. But with a CAPEX this year slightly more than the $1.6 billion last year, the operator will base any further fiber extensions on customer demand. Qwest faces increasing competition from cable operators such as Comcast and even some cities in its region such as Portland, OR, which may build their own fiber networks. Qwest broke even for the first time since its 2000 merger with U S West.

Qwest's fourth-quarter revenue increased by 1.3 percent to $3.48 billion and totaled $13.9 billion for 2005, up from $13.8 billion in 2004. Qwest increased its spending in the fourth quarter to $503 million, up 35 percent from $372 million during the same period in 2004. The company now reaches 77 percent of its footprint with DSL services that run off existing copper lines between 3 and 5 Mbps. Qwest serves nearly 70,000 customers with fiber, copper and coax TV options. Qwest offers direct broadcast satellite service with partner DirecTV with 128,000 new customers in the fourth quarter, a 31 percent rise compared to the third quarter. A majority of new entrants still do not understand "the way content happens," and the importance of "windowing" for the film and TV value chain. Ovum's Aleksandra Bosnjak found that emerging independent filmmakers will accept IPTV as a new content delivery method for financing, as they are more concerned with getting their story across and reaching wide audiences beyond domestic markets than worrying about distribution issues. However, seasoned producers and buyers derive a bulk of their revenues from DVD rentals and sales, rather than box office, and view IPTV as a pure DRM issue. DAILY IPTV NEWS: Mayor: AT&T deceives town on IPTV deployment

IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- Livermore, CA, Mayor Marshall Kamena terms AT&T's installation of Project Lightspeed cabinets and equipment in the city as "a rather deceiving incident" with AT&T being issued a permit under "false pretense." In early December last year, SBC applied for a number of encroachment permits with no mention of Project Lightspeed. The city thought it to be routine system upgrade work on its regular phone service--until recently. Now that the city has found AT&T installing Project Lightspeed cabinets and making other upgrades to its equipment, the operator's permit has been revoked and all work has been stopped. AT&T says it's spending between $4.2 billion and $4.8 billion to upgrade and ready its IPTV networks. It also holds that as a regulated telephone company, it doesn't need to apply for a cable franchise. It's safe to say this is only the beginning of the regulatory battles between the telcos and cable operators over this nascent technology.

In a similar incident in Walnut Creek, SBC began upgrading above-ground copper wires as part of a service upgrade. However, the city required a franchise agreement as the lines would complement Project Lightspeed. AT&T (then SBC) sued Walnut Creek over the disagreement last year. Despite the resistance from Livermore and Walnut Creek, neighboring San Ramon has authorized a draft resolution in support of Project Lightspeed. IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- AV network specialist Exterity launched an IPTV system that delivers 60 digital and terrestrial channels to more than 250 displays and an estimated 2,500 desktops and Reuters' headquarters in London. The system replaces a coaxial system that the company found dated, slow to deploy and expensive. The news agency said the IPTV setup will help its personnel stay abreast of national, international and internal news feeds. Exterity's plug-and-play broadcast TV to IP network distribution products, called "TVgateways," support the service. The gateways can handle up to six DVB-T or DVB-S feeds and can stream the program contents of up to six broadcast TV multiplexes over a building network. IPTV NEWS: Telcos lobby Senate to change video franchising law

IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- Verizon's CEO Ivan Seidenberg and AT&T's CEO Ed Whitacre lobbied the Senate yesterday, asking Congress to change national video-franchising rules. These are the same regulations that telcos say have stymied or preempted many IPTV deployments in the U.S. The franchise rules require cable companies and IPTV service providers to negotiate with local governments to get permission to deploy their services. Cable has been coping with them since the start, but telcos say it would take years for them to break in--not to mention lots of cash. For landscaping local community parks.

Seidenberg and Whitacre's pitch is yet another affirmation of the telcos' commitment to deploying IPTV services. It also shows just how frustrated they are with the decades-old law which makes little mention of the Internet, let alone a technology like IPTV.

Verizon and AT&T brought out the big guns yesterday after talks of rewriting the Telecom Act of '96 died down. Many consider the sprawling Telecom Act the most lobbied bill that ever hit the Senate floor, while former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan called it one of the most important drivers of the economy in the late '90s. With prospects of the Herculean task being taken up again decidedly unlikely, telcos better hope the Senate answers their direct call. I think they will. IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- Though IPTV is still in its infancy and availability in U.S. is limited, 56 percent of all 1,000 plus adults surveyed by Harris Interactive have heard of Internet television. Forty-two percent of those surveyed expressed interest in IPTV since it would be less costly than cable or satellite.

The survey results suggest that the adoption of IPTV could threaten cable and satellite services. Seventeen percent of the respondents said they would cancel their existing TV service for IPTV; 67 percent said they would keep their existing cable or satellite service and give IPTV a trial run; only 7 percent said they would add IPTV to their existing service, and the remaining 10 percent did not have cable or satellite TV but said they would adopt IPTV. The survey also shows that 33 percent of the respondents were most comfortable with cable companies like CableVision and Comcast to deliver IPTV services. IPTV NEWS: FCC believes cable a la carte saves money

IPTV & Video On Demand Industry & Market News.- Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) recent study on cable TV pricing concluded that cable TV subscribers would save from 3 percent to 13 percent on their cable bills in a pick-and-choose pricing system. This is in contrast to their 2004 finding that consumers wouldn't benefit, based on faulty data the agency obtained from the cable industry. The "a la carte" system will replace the bundled services offered by the cable industry. The new system also promises to give more parental control over the amount of violent and racy programming that children are exposed to on TV by customizing packages.

The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) does not find it appropriate that Washington would mandate how the industry runs its business. Industry analysts cite First Amendment concerns, saying that diversity voices could be lost if smaller niche networks catering to minorities are forced out of business. Consumers Union forsees a whole new debate on the benefits of letting consumers pick their own channels on cable TV. Telcos have started lobbying eliminating video franchising to speed up their time-to-marketing IPTV services against the cable companies. Privately held SkyStream was founded in 1996, enjoyed seven sequential years of revenue growth and just recently attained profitability in the fourth quarter of last year. In 2005 its revenue was $30.7 million, up 43 percent from the year before, with a gross margin of 65 percent. IPTV Industry & Market News.- Espial and Amino have joined forces to provide an "innovative" set-top box solution for Allin Interactive, which boasts many clients in the cruise ship industry. Espial's middleware EVO solution will run atop the underlying Amino IntAct IPTV platform. Allin says the AmiNET110H STB with Espial's software will make it easier to develop and rapidly deploy products for its cruise ship clientèle. Allin's $340 million in interactive TV revenue last year came from deployments for The Mayo Clinic, Royal Caribbean International, Costa Crociere, Celebrity Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line.

IPTV Industry & Market News.- Another weekly update on Verizon's PR efforts to rekindle Wall Street's confidence in its FiOS IPTV service and its fiber to the home project: CEO Ivan Seidenberg talks to The Washington Post. The cost of FTTH fell by about 30 percent last year and should fall an additional 15 percent to 20 percent this year. "When it's all said and done, the growth opportunity here will be far greater than anybody is accepting at this point," Seidenberg explained. Unfortunately, he qualified that statement with visions of dwellers of fiber-equipped homes consulting their doctors via video link, telecommuting in large enough numbers to reduce global warming and other services not yet dreamed up.

Maybe giving the hype cycle a jump start sells stock, but it's not the only way. Fiber will pay for itself in the years ahead, Verizon just needs to hope its estimates of falling costs will prove true and, with any luck, conservative.

Well, whatever the Slingbox is, Liberty Group, EchoStar and Goldman Sachs have put their seal of approval on it in the form of $46.6 million in venture capital. For the uninitiated, Sling Media has a product called the Slingbox that transmits cable and satellite TV programming from a subscriber's home through the Internet, making it available to the subscriber on a laptop, mobile phone or other portable device while they are away from the living room. Now that Sling has a multimillion-dollar spotlight, analysts are beginning to question its legality.

Since Sling doesn't own the rights to any of the content it slings, is it legal? Because the technology maintains the one-to-one relationship between the subscriber and the TV set (only one person can control the TV whether by laptop on the other side of the world or from the couch), the Slingbox is, in effect, a long-distance remote control. So Sling seems safe, but other forms of place-shifting may equate to stealing TV services by franchise, and that could lead to some interesting lawsuits.

IPTV Industry & Market News.- Cable industry leaders aired their grievances at the recent Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers' Emerging Technologies conference (or the SCTE ET, for short). Much of the talk reportedly rehashed ongoing concerns of telcos winning the triple-play war by using IPTV to lure existing cable customers away. However, many speakers argued that telcos are no longer their biggest threat--it's now video over IP enablers Google, Yahoo!, AOL and Apple. The good people behind the SCTE ET even treated attendees to a "chilling" and "humorous" video that depicted Google taking over the entire media business in the years ahead.

Cable MSOs are used to competing with the likes of Dish Network, DirecTV, and EchoStar, but the SCTE ET saw the cable industry's first public displays of openly "fretting" about new lines of competition. In fact, the writer of the Cable Digital News article linked to below seems to have gone out of his way for fear-mongering word choices, among them: "worry," "fret," "concern," "threaten," "battle," "hurt," and, yes, even "kill" is in there. The story ends with some comfort: "We're definitely not toast."

IPTV Industry & Market News.- In the coming years as analog TV is phased-out in favor of all Digital TV, Internet Protocol Television-IPTV will become major competition for cable, Satellite and broadcast TV. Beacuse with IP television you'll get 7,000 channels, that's more than cable and satellite combine... More than 1,000 music channels, and regular channels like Discovery Channel, and others.

Akimbo Systems is one of the first to offer an IPTV based service, sending on-demand video programs over broadband Internet connections. The overall impression is that while Akimbo is innovative, the choice of programs to watch is limited. They will need time to make deals for more quality content to offer subscribers, but with 7,000 channels I don't think we need to way for them to add more. That said, Akimbo is well worth a look and could be a nice addition to your digital entertainment set-up. IPTV is also well under way by Microsoft, SBC Communications (watch the Flash presentation), and Verizon in the U.S. market. Butt, most of this big guys will not offer any IPTV service maybe untill 2007 or later... And for sure their prices will be a little higher than what Akimbo is charging right now. IPTV Industry & Market News.- “They are all knocking on our door wanting all our content for free, and it’s so difficult when they don’t understand the costs involved and how this industry operates”. The reason I started Digital TX Ltd was due to hearing this in conversation more times than I care to remember. Time and time again I’ve heard movie studios, broadcasters, TV production companies, record labels and games publishers express to me their deep concern that the enthusiasm shown by ISPs to offer premium content is not tempered by any consideration or understanding for the processes, risks and costs involved in the acquisition of rights to their intellectual property.

When you have the same conversation with ISPs, the talk is of a highly competitive market where loss leading products are the norm and margins are forever falling. The landscape never seems to stabilise for a minute, with both regulatory and market forces changing faster than the rate of the technology that is being deployed There is frustration and bewilderment at how time-consuming licensing negotiations are with content owners, indignation at apparent arrogance and pre-paid sales guarantees, and even the most innocent of confusion as to why an industry that could seemingly prosper so effectively from technology seems to regard it with such fear and contempt.

Both industries are stepping out into a brave new world and taking commercial risks based on excitement over an as yet unproven technology. ISPs want to deploy ‘triple play’ services that include IPTV entertainment, and content owners are realising an entire new audience has emerged that they can licence the rights to their intellectual property to. Both also suffer the nagging issue of chronic piracy, but in differing ways. Ironically, they are the answers to each others’ problems. My company exists to help them understand each other and to help them build a vision of a very exciting future ahead.

The old cliché is that content is king. Now the structural issues of IPTV are reaching an initial degree of quasi-maturity (in the sense that working deployments are in place around the world and operating effectively), and both management and engineering teams have solved what are the intellectual riddles of putting the equipment into the field, the focus is now on getting hold of the right material that will attract and keep viewers. For those that have been here before, that is an absurd way of going about things as that content takes a very long time to acquire and is the lifeblood of an entertainment business.

The business of agreeing rights over the distribution of content is almost always tedious and long-winded. If you’ve ever been privy to negotiations for channel carriage, record deal signings or sub-licensing, you’ll know that Its about as unsexy as it gets – lawyers talking to other lawyers, defining every last detail of allowances, sub-clauses and limitations, for every single time the content is re-licensed to someone new. Forget cigars, champagne and dancing girls – this is solid paperwork and a crash course in pulling teeth. And it is a big boy’s game – a billion-dollar industry that everyone wants a piece of, which means you better have some serious chips to get a seat at the table. Read the whole article...

IPTV Industry & Market News.- Following last month's big content deals with BBC Worldwide, Paramount and Warner Music Group, British Telecom inked deals with National Geographic Channel and British children's television giants HIT Entertainment and Nelvana. BT said more content deals are on the way as it prepares for its IPTV service launch later this fall. BT's service will use Microsoft software and an STB from Philips. BT said its service will be deployed nationwide and will not require monthly subscriptions.

IPTV Industry & Market News.- BellSouth plans to expand its technical IPTV trials to market trials with 1,000 participants by the middle of the year. If all goes well the company expects to launch the service commercially by the end of the year or early 2007. BellSouth recently inked a deal with SES Americom to trial its IP Prime, a satellite-centric IPTV distribution solution that reportedly enables the distribution of hundreds of standard and HD IPTV streams as part of a triple play. BellSouth is testing IP Prime alongside its ADSL2+ platform. The company denies claims it's waiting to see if AT&T will go with Microsoft's IPTV software before it does as well.

IPTV Industry & Market News.- Following last week's call for a city-wide fiber deployment in Paris by the city's mayor, France Telecom says it will launch a field test of fiber-to-the-home to some of its customers in the city and neighboring suburbs. The telco said the offering would provide users with multiple streams of HD IPTV to several television sets. Last week's news from the Parisian mayor was surprising for the city and its extremely competitive broadband network. Following the mayor's FTTH pep rally, President Jacques Chirac endorsed a France de Fibre, and now France Telecom has taken the mic to announce its plans to fiber up the city. It seems FT's move is a separate venture from the mayor's requested muni-fiber deployment.

IPTV Industry & Market News.- In the shadow of Cisco's surprising $6.9 billion acquisition of set-top box maker Scientific Atlanta late last year, Motorola heightened the tension in the STB market this week with the acquisition of Swedish STB maker Kreatel. Six-year-old Kreatel makes a Linux-based set-top box with open-source technology that extends into the application and middleware layers. This flexibility enables Motorola to use the offering with a broad range of apps, while allowing the STBs to keep up with inevitable changes and network evolution. Kreatel boasts customers like Telefonica in Spain, KPN in the Netherlands and TeliaSonera in Sweden.

Technology integration and the fear of outdated IPTV STBs in a short period of time are two hot-button issues in the industry right now. Motorola's acquisition of Kreatel is one step toward putting those fears to rest. Analysts, however, say the deal is mostly a defensive move on Motorola's part. According to reports from In-Stat, Motorola and Cisco accounted for 90 percent of worldwide STBs shipped during the first half of 2005. The Kreatel acquisition will strengthen Motorola's foothold in Europe, a region with a far richer IPTV market than the U.S.
